What Sludgineers is
Sludgineers is a cozy pollution-cleaning game wearing an incremental game's skeleton. You drive a cleaning van out to jobs across a pixel-art countryside, aim a high-powered vacuum hose at the purple sludge covering the scene, and get paid for what you clear. Cash and refined resources feed a large upgrade tree, a refinery you build and automate, and a quest board.
Steam files Sludgineers under Casual and Simulation, and its most-applied community tags run Cozy, Cleaning, Incremental, Relaxing, Mining, Resource Management, Economy, Idler and Pixel Graphics. That tag cloud is a fair summary of the experience.
Who made Sludgineers
Sludgineers is the work of two small studios collaborating. Snickerdoodle Games handled lead development and programming through Aaron Neugebauer, and Funk Games handled design, art and audio through Andy Wiltshire. A third contributor, James from Funk Games, joined later in development for polish and deadline management. Funk Games publishes, alongside Gamersky Games for the Chinese market.
Snickerdoodle Games' other title is JankyBot, a physics puzzle game about assembling robots from blocks to explore a spaceship. If you searched Sludgineers and Google offered you JankyBot too, that is why — same developer. See games like Sludgineers.

How Sludgineers reached launch
Sludgineers was built in roughly a year and marketed almost entirely through festivals rather than advertising. The free itch.io browser build arrived in February 2026, the Steam demo in March, and from there the wishlist count climbed steadily: 5,500 in the demo's first week, 11,111 by late May, 26,000 after the June festival run, and 33,000+ by the end of July.
That June run did the heavy lifting — Frosty Games Fest, Summer Game Fest and Steam Next Fest in the same fortnight, each accompanied by demo updates that added gamepad improvements, interface work, balance changes and the Magnet power-up. By 31 July the game was content-complete, Steam-approved and translated into all 14 languages, leaving August for playtesting. Full timeline on the release date page.
What makes Sludgineers unusual
- It is genuinely two genres. Most cleaning games have no economy underneath; most incrementals have no hands-on act. Sludgineers commits to both.
- Fourteen languages from a two-person team. Almost unheard of at $6.99.
- Two free official trials. A Steam demo and a free browser build, both still live.
- Finite by design. No prestige, no endless mode. It ends at 5–6 hours and is priced accordingly.
- Public development. The developers acknowledged their own weakest area — the opening fifteen minutes — in a public FAQ rather than ignoring it.
