How to Play Sludgineers: Beginner's Guide to the First Hour
Sludgineers is simple to start and easy to play badly. You park a van, aim a vacuum hose at purple sludge, and clear as much as you can before the Energy Level meter empties. This guide covers the HUD, the payout maths and the three habits that make your first hour of Sludgineers roughly twice as profitable.

The Sludgineers HUD, explained
Everything you need is on screen during a job. From the top of the Sludgineers interface:
| Element | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| END JOB | Top left | Leaves the job early and banks what you have earned so far |
| Energy Level | Top centre | Your battery, shown as a percentage. Drains while the vacuum runs. At zero you get a Low Energy warning and cannot clean |
| Power-up banner | Top centre-left | Appears when a job modifier or power-up is active |
| Cash | Top right | Running total, with green +$ pop-ups as you earn |
| OPTIONS | Top right | Settings, including custom volume controls |
| Job Progress | Bottom bar | Percentage cleared, with four cash milestone markers along it |

How a job works, start to finish
- Pick a job on the overworld map. Sludgineers presents the countryside as a road network with markers on unlocked jobs. Each is a hand-built pixel-art scene.
- Your van parks at the roadside. You do not drive around inside a job — the van stays put and you work from it, aiming the hose out across the scene.
- Aim and hold. The hose fires a beam at whatever you point it at. Sludge dissolves under it and cash ticks up. Move steadily; the beam has reach but not infinite reach.
- Watch Energy Level. It drops the whole time you are cleaning. This is your real clock.
- Uncover objects. Cars, sheds, shopfronts, benches, signposts and collectible tokens sit under the sludge. Exposing them pays Object Bonuses on top of the cleaning income.
- Fill the Job Progress bar. Four cash milestones sit along it. Each one you cross is banked.
- Cash out. Either clear the job or hit END JOB. Sludgineers shows the payout screen.
Reading the Job Complete screen
This screen is where Sludgineers tells you whether you played the job well, and most new players skim past it. It breaks your earnings into four lines:
- Completion Cash — the base payout for how much you cleared, with a multiplier applied (shown as e.g. ×1.1). Raising that multiplier is one of the highest-value things upgrades do.
- Object Bonuses — everything you uncovered. On a well-played job this can be a third of your total.
- Bonus Rewards — smaller extras.
- Job Total — the sum, plus a separate list of Resources Collected, the refined materials that feed the upgrade tree and the refinery.

Controls
Sludgineers is deliberately undemanding on input. Steam lists a Mouse Only Option, meaning the whole game is playable with just a mouse, and full controller support including DualShock and DualSense pads. It is also tagged Playable without Timed Input and Playable at your own pace — nothing depends on reflexes.
- Aiming: point where you want the hose to fire and hold.
- Upgrade tree: click and drag to move the view; right-click a node to toggle it as a favourite so you can find what you are saving for.
- Zoom: the tree and map both have plus, minus and recentre buttons in the corner.
- Tabs: UPGRADES and QUESTS sit side by side at the top of the meta screens.
Three habits for your first hour
1. Clear completely, not widely
New players sweep the hose across the whole map skimming the top layer. That fills Job Progress slowly and misses Object Bonuses entirely. Work outward from one edge and finish each patch. Uncovering a single car pays more than thinning sludge over ten times the area.
2. Treat Energy as your budget
Energy Level is the binding constraint in early Sludgineers, not suction power. Every second the beam is on costs energy whether or not it is hitting anything. Do not hold the trigger while repositioning. See energy and battery management.
3. Bank the milestone, then decide
The four Job Progress markers are checkpoints. If you are close to one and low on energy, push for it. If you have just crossed one and energy is nearly gone, END JOB and bank — a job you leave at 60% with a milestone banked beats one you abandon at 62% without.

Sludgineers FAQ
How do you play Sludgineers?
In Sludgineers you drive a cleaning van to a job on the overworld map, aim a vacuum hose at the purple sludge covering the scene, and clear as much as possible before the Energy Level meter empties. Cash and refined resources from each job are spent on an upgrade tree, a refinery and quests.
What are the Sludgineers controls?
Sludgineers supports mouse-only play, keyboard and mouse, and full controller including DualShock and DualSense. You aim and hold to fire the vacuum; in the upgrade tree you click-drag to pan and right-click to favourite a node.
Why does my Sludgineers job keep ending?
Your Energy Level ran out. The meter at the top of the screen drains whenever the vacuum is running, and a Low Energy warning stops you cleaning. Buy energy and battery capacity upgrades early, and avoid holding the beam while repositioning.
Can you replay jobs in Sludgineers?
Yes. The Job Complete screen has a REPLAY button, and jobs can be repeated as often as you like. Replaying earlier jobs with upgraded gear is a core part of the money loop.
