What Is Sludgineers?
Sludgineers is a cozy, single-player active incremental game about cleaning, mining and refining pollution. You drive a cleaning van into a polluted countryside job, aim a high-powered vacuum hose at the purple sludge smothering the map, and watch cash tick up as the world underneath comes back to life. The cash and refined resources you carry home feed a very large upgrade tree, a refinery, a quest board and a growing fleet of hi-tech tools.
The word people usually reach for is “satisfying”. Sludgineers sits exactly on the line between a cleaning game and an idle/incremental game: every job is hands-on and skill-adjacent, but the real progression is the exponential curve you build between jobs. Snickerdoodle Games and Funk Games spent about a year on it, and the pixel-art presentation, chunky sound design and steady drip of unlocks are what most reviews single out.

This wiki exists because Sludgineers launched on 25 August 2026 with almost no reference material online. Every page here is written by players, checked line by line against the official Steam store page, the developer FAQ thread and in-game screenshots, and dated so you can tell how fresh it is.
Sludgineers Core Loop in 60 Seconds
If you only read one section of this Sludgineers wiki, read this one. The whole game is six steps on repeat, and understanding them makes the upgrade decisions obvious.
- Pick a job from the overworld map. Sludgineers shows the countryside as a connected road network with smiley-face markers on the jobs you have unlocked. Each one is a hand-built pixel-art scene — forest, lakeside village, town square, autumn farm, beach, industrial estate.
- Vacuum the sludge. Aim the hose from the van and hold. Sludge peels away in real time, and the Job Progress bar along the bottom fills toward four cash milestones.
- Watch your Energy Level. The meter at the top drains while you are sucking. Hit zero and a Low Energy warning stops you cold, so battery capacity is a genuine progression gate.
- Uncover objects for bonus cash. Cars, sheds, shopfronts, benches and signposts hidden under the sludge pay out separately as Object Bonuses when you expose them.
- Cash out on the Job Complete screen. Sludgineers totals Completion Cash (with a multiplier), Object Bonuses and Bonus Rewards into a Job Total, then lists the refined resources you collected. You can hit REPLAY immediately or go back to the map.
- Spend everything. Pour the money into the upgrade tree, feed raw sludge into the refinery, tick off quests, unlock the next region, and go again with a faster, hungrier rig.

How to Play Sludgineers Free
This is the question we get most, and the answer is genuinely good: there are two free, official ways to try Sludgineers before you spend anything.
- Free browser version on itch.io. Snickerdoodle Games publishes a free HTML5 build you can play immediately in a browser — no account, no download, no install. It is a cut-down slice rather than the full release, but it is the fastest way to find out whether the loop clicks for you. Full details on playing Sludgineers free online.
- Free demo on Steam. The Sludgineers demo landed on 17 March 2026 and is still downloadable after launch. It limits regions, levels, quests and upgrades, and it holds a 94% positive rating from around 150 reviews. What the Sludgineers demo includes.
If you decide to buy, the full Sludgineers release is $6.99 USD, discounted 20% to $5.59 until 8 September 2026. See Sludgineers price and launch discount and how to get Sludgineers for all three official routes side by side.
Tools and the Sludgineers Upgrade Tree
The upgrade screen is where Sludgineers turns from a cleaning game into an incremental one. It is a sprawling, drag-to-pan node tree with colour-coded branches, multi-rank nodes (most run 1 to 3 ranks), and a favourites system bound to right-click so you can pin what you are saving for.

Nodes cost cash and refined resources, so the refinery and the tree pull on each other constantly. Broadly the tree covers suction power and range, energy and battery capacity, cash and resource multipliers, refinery throughput and automation, and the late-game hi-tech tools. Sludgineers gates the headline unlocks — vacuum drones and air purifiers — behind meaningful investment, and drones then get their own sub-branch (battery, density, speed) on top.

New players almost always over-invest in raw suction first. Our Sludgineers best upgrades and upgrade order page explains why energy capacity and cash multipliers usually pay back faster, and the upgrade tree database lists the branches in full.
Regions, Refinery and Quests
Between jobs, Sludgineers drops you onto an overworld map of the countryside — rivers, bridges, roads, little settlements and, dominating the middle of it, the refinery you build and expand. Raw sludge you hauled home gets processed there into the refined resource types the upgrade tree demands. The full release adds refinery automation, which is the single biggest quality-of-life jump in Sludgineers and is not present in the demo.

A QUESTS tab sits next to UPGRADES and runs alongside everything else — objectives like refining a set number of barrels of a named sludge type pay out flat cash bonuses. They are a steady secondary income stream and they nudge you toward systems you might otherwise ignore. See Sludgineers quests, all regions and jobs, and sludge types and refined resources.
